It is a video compact disc (VCD) that contains video and audio - moving pictures and sound. It is capable of holding up to 74 minutes of full motion video with quality stereo sound. VCD uses the MPEG-1 standard to store video and audio in a high density form. As opposed to DVD that utilizes the MPEG-2. This ensures full compatibility with a wide range of devices. It is a worldwide, standards independent format which is endorsed by Sony, Philips, Matsushita and JVC.
The best thing about a VCD is that you can run it on a variety of different platforms including personal computers and laptops/notebooks (both PC & Mac), DVD players, stand-alone VCD players, televisions, and game boxes (e.g. Playstations) and multimedia boxes.
If your DVD Player can play CD-R then it would be able to play VCDs.

The most common application of Video CD has been for playing movies and music videos. With the release of Video CD 2.0 specification, the format is enjoying greatly expanded popularity. Video CD 2.0 provides full interactivity via remote control, making the format appealing for a wide range of multimedia applications. It has gained rapid acceptance for its ability to deliver high quality, full-motion digital video cheaply.

DVD Video is a standard for content on DVD media. Presently, DVD Video is the dominant form of home video distribution worldwide, although it was surpassed by Blu-ray Disc in 2006. Although many resolutions and formats are supported, most consumer DVDs use either 4:3 or anamorphic 16:9 aspect ratio MPEG-2 video, stored at a resolution of 720/704x480 (NTSC) or 720/704x576 (PAL) at 29.97, 25, or 23.976 FPS. Audio is commonly stored using the Dolby Digital (AC-3) or Digital Theater System (DTS) formats, ranging from 16-bits/48 kHz to 24-bits/96 kHz format with monaural to 5.1-channel "Surround Sound" presentation, and/or MPEG-1 Layer 2 and/or LPCM Stereophonic. Although the specifications for video and audio requirements vary by global region and television system, many DVD players support all possible formats. DVD Video also supports features such as menus, selectable subtitles, multiple camera angles, and multiple audio tracks.
The DVDs have Region code. The Region codes according to countries are as follows:

• 0: Informal term meaning worldwide. Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1-6 flags set.
• 1: Canada, United States, U.S. territories, Bermuda
• 2: Europe (except Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus), Middle East, Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, French overseas territories, Greenland
• 3: Southeast Asia, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau
• 4: Mexico, Central and South America, Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, Oceania
• 5: India, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Africa (except Egypt, South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho, and French overseas territories), Central and South Asia, Mongolia, North Korea
• 6: Peoples Republic of China, Hong Kong
• 7: Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and media copies of pre-releases in Asia)
• 8: International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.

Blu-ray Disc (also known as BR or Blu-ray) is an optical disc storage medium designed to supersede the standard DVD format. Blu-ray Disc is a next-generation, optical disc format that enables the ultimate high-definition entertainment experience. Its main uses are for storing high-definition video, PlayStation 3 video games, and other data, with up to 25 GB per single layered, and 50 GB per dual layered disc. Although these numbers represent the standard storage for Blu-Ray drives, the specification is open-ended, with the upper theoretical storage limit left unclear. 200 GB discs are available, and 100 GB discs are readable without extra equipment or modified firmware. The disc has the same physical dimensions as standard DVDs and CDs.
High-definition video may be stored on Blu-ray discs with up to 1920x1080 pixel resolution at up to 59.94 fields per second, corresponding to 29.97 frames per second interlaced or 24 frames per second progressive. Alternatively, progressive scan at 1280x720 pixel resolution can go up to 59.94 frames per second.
Blu-Ray Discs can only be played on Blu-Ray Players or Drives which support Blu-Ray Disc.

Region Codes: The Blu-ray Disc region coding scheme divides the world into 3 regions, labeled A, B, and C.

• Region B includes most European, African and southwest Asian countries plus Australia and New Zealand.
• Region C includes India and the remaining central and south Asian countries, as well as China and Russia.
